Chicago…a kind of story poem

I don’t know where this place is
but it reminded me of when
a big storms would come up in Chicago
and I would take two buses
to get to the Outer Drive
where I could stand across the street
from the North Avenue Rocks
and watch Lake Michigan
smash against the the cement
the waves
now and then
washing over moving cars
(sometimes they had to close the street)
it was exciting
standing in the rain
in front of all that
power
and I grabbed
the magic
that was there
and never
let it go

you can do that
when you’re young
and fearless
you can take the magic
from a place
but you should know
that if you do
you’ll belong to
that place
forever
