Seeking…
what is
HUMAN KINDNESS
is it feeding someone
giving them money
where does it begin
and does it ever end
does it only exist
for other human beings
not the the animals who are
slaughtered
and eaten
worn on the feet
of humans
does it exist
for those we are TOLD
are our
enemies
the people
held against their wills
in detention camps
after having done nothing wrong
their children taken from them
left to die
on cement slabs
does human kindness have
an expiration date
a book of instructions
does it apply to all living things
trees
air
water
bees
plants
and wilderness spaces
and what about
government
bosses
industry
religion
and
schools
is there
HUMAN KINDNESS
in any of those places
that isn’t used for
SELF GAIN
how do people
decide who gets it
and who doesn’t
is health care
homelessness
child abuse
racism
sexism
agism
violence against any group
exempt
the sign
this man is holding
needs to be more specific
because in this day and age
when everything is in the details
no one will know what he
really wants
or what they should give him
maybe
all he wants is a hug

Homeless…
it’s hard
for a lot of people
to imagine
laying down on a sidewalk
and going to sleep
it’s not something
most of us
would ever think of doing
but for a lot of folks
the street is all they have
whether mentally ill
or down on their luck
societies
across the globe
are putting people
onto the street
homeless people
aren’t the problem
governments are
the homeless
are just one more
disenfranchised group
of citizens
who have no value
to the state
because they are poor
and
therefore
powerless
