The city…(Chicago)

giants
made of steel
glass and chrome
stand as testament
to our ability
to build
and reach
for the sky
while too often
ignoring
what’s going on
down on the ground

The city…

there’s danger everywhere
in a city
even in the hives
built to hold us
hallways
elevators
stairwells
can be full of
monsters
that’s why
a person should always
carry an attitude
and be able to
throw magic around
it helps to have a
HELLHOUND
for a pet
I mean they’re really
nice dogs
and very protective
once they bond
with their person
so take my advice
and start shopping around
there’s just one thing
they eat
a LOT
but trust me
it’s worth it

The City…

cities are electric
full of energy
emotion
and
PEOPLE
they feed
those who live in them
through
neon
art
amazing food
style
and
music
the pulse
of a city
is
noisy
they’re
dirty in places
angry
vicious
dangerous
and even deadly
they are also filled with
kindness
generosity
BEAUTY
and
explosions
of
creativity
cities
are
ALIVE
no one ever
leaves their city
they simply become
part of the streets
buildings
the water
and the air itself
people
and their cities
are
one

The City…

if you’re driving
be sure you have a full tank
of gas
you don’t want to get stuck
with no where to go
it’s dangerous to be on
most streets when it’s dark
including expressways
if your car needs attention
don’t drive it
in the city at night
monsters live
in the shadows
and no one will
hear you
scream

The City…

don’t park underground
and never use stairs
in the city
at night
not
EVER
very
bad
things
can
happen
in those places
very
very
bad

The City…

don’t walk past doorways
at night
not on city streets
things can pull you inside

if you walk next to the curb
you can still get dragged
into something
it’s a tricky situation

being alert
won’t help
because those
reaching for you
aren’t from around
here

The City…

cities don’t sleep
some part of them
is always awake
always searching
scrabbling
sniffing out
the dreams
of those who
forget to
tuck them away
properly

at night
anything goes
that’s why
the city seems empty
when it’s dark
smart people
stay inside
bolt their doors
and lock their dreams
in monster proof
safes
that can only be opened
when it’s light
some of them
put their hearts
in there too
just in case

The City…

don’t be fooled by neatness
those are just city facades
they look nice
but looks
don’t mean anything
at night
the only thing that matters
at night
is how fast
you  can
run

The City…

never
take shortcuts
in the city at night
no matter how much time
you can save
alleys are okay during  daylight
kids play in alleys
when it’s light
but in the darkness
things change
there are portals
that let other beings
 into our world

you don’t want to meet them
they love way you smell
the way you taste
and they are
always
starving

The City…

sometimes one wonders
whether streetlights
make things safer
or more dangerous
the light make one stand out
whereas the shadows
can sometimes be used
as hiding places
it all depends
on the night
and what’s
out hunting
to be honest
however
there are no safe places
on empty city streets at night
no safe places
at all
