Shakespeare and Company

Written by Sylvia Beach herself, this is a true accounting of the fabulous American bookstore in Paris, Shakespeare and Company.  It’s a gentle telling of life in Paris and the expats that lived there.  It’s a story about the writers, the people and the making of a legend.  Ms. Beach has no ego to speak of and the story is quite matter-of-fact.  It’s about the men and women who gathered at the bookstore and used the shop as their mail drop and meeting place.  I loved it.  It’s filled with details.  There are photographs of the first Shakespeare and Company as well as some of the authors we all know and love.

Fabulous bookstore

It has always been a dream of mine to visit Shakespeare and Company so I was thrilled when that dream came true. It was a beautiful day. Crowded, but just enough. It’s cramped inside but it was wonderful and I could easily imagine American writers in Paris meeting there to talk and exchange ideas.
