Shakespeare and Company
Written by Sylvia Beach herself, this is a true accounting of the fabulous American bookstore in Paris, Shakespeare and Company. It’s a gentle telling of life in Paris and the expats that lived there. It’s a story about the writers, the people and the making of a legend. Ms. Beach has no ego to speak of and the story is quite matter-of-fact. It’s about the men and women who gathered at the bookstore and used the shop as their mail drop and meeting place. I loved it. It’s filled with details. There are photographs of the first Shakespeare and Company as well as some of the authors we all know and love.
