Annie…Short story…18

“They’re still after your dad,” said Annie.

“Our dad,” said Clark.

“Our dad. They’re after him for something I did.”

“You just sent Gabe away, you didn’t kill him.”

“Feels as if I did.”

“Well, you didn’t.”

“What’s in the cake?  Why do we eat so much of it and why does everyone love it?”

Clark smiled.  “It’s real Devil’s Food cake with Chocolate Devil’s icing.  It makes everyone stronger, healthier and happier.  The white wings have white angel food cake and it makes them feel like they’re starving because of the way they see everything around them.  That’s why Matthew ate two pieces of our cake and took the one you handed him, as well.  It doesn’t make them feel as good as it makes us feel, but anything is better than white angel food cake.  Where we come from, everyone eats it everyday, just like we do. The name is just a joke but we think it’s funny.”

“So, it’s addictive?”

“I suppose it is, in a way, but it’s more like a delicious multiple vitamin. It has everything we need to be the best we can be.”

“Is it magick?” asked Annie.

“A little,” said Lucifer, walking into the room.  “Magick is what we are. So, what are you going to do with all your new freedom?”

“Pretty much all the stuff we’ve always done behind your back,” said Clark.

Lucifer rubbed his hands over his face.  “TMI.”

Annie burst into laughter. “You know what that means?”

“Of course, I know what it means.”

“I think Clark has a girlfriend,” smiled Annie.

“I do not,” he said, glaring at her, then grinning.

“She works at the organic fruit stand.  Her name is Jasmine.  She’s really pretty. Her eyes are the lightest brown I’ve ever seen and she can’t stop smiling whenever he’s around.”

“That’s not true,” laughed Clark.

“You know it is,” said Annie.

“And what about Tommy?” said Clark.

Annie turned scarlet.  “What about him?”

“Every time we go to the bookstore he pushes everyone out of the way so that he can wait on you.  He’s always asking what you like to read and…”

“It’s a BOOKSTORE, of course he’s asking me what I like to read.”

“You KNOW what I mean.”

She looked at Lucifer and sighed.  “Your son is weird.”

“You mean your brother?” asked Lucifer.

Annie stood there with her mouth open.  “My brother,” she said, looking at Clark.

“I’m your brother so that means I can tease you more often and be mean to you.”

“No it doesn’t,” she said.

“I think it does,” he snickered.

“I’m assuming Jasmine and Tommy are human.”

Clark and Annie nodded.

“Just remember that humans are fragile and they die quickly.  So broken hearts and all that.”

“Dad!” said Clark.  “That’s not fair.”

“It’s the truth. You can’t stop them from dying.”

“What are you going to do about Matthew?” asked Annie, pushing Clark into a chair.

“There’s nothing to do.  He’s on one side and I’m on the other.  There’s no talking about the issue because there’s no room for compromise.”

“Will he try to kill you?” asked Clark.

“Only if he has to.  We go back a long way and that means something.”

“It seems like a lot of people want to kill you,” said Annie, thoughtfully.

“That always do,” he said, flatly.
