“Will you tell me about the cards?
“Sure,” said Ace, kissing his shoulder.
“Why do you trust me?” he asked.
“I don’t know,” she sighed. “I just do. Besides, you know I can kill you anytime I want to and you seem able to accept things as they come along. No hysterics, no pretending that what’s happening, isn’t happening.”
“Thank you and yes, I know you can kill me whenever you feel like it. I kind of like that,” he said smiling.
“Still,” he continued, “I know it wouldn’t be easy for you to do it.”
“If you say so.”
“Oh, COME ON! You can at least give me that, can’t you?”
“It would be harder than killing a stranger, how’s that?” she said, trying not to laugh.
“I guess it’s better than nothing,” he sighed, dramatically. “So whats with the cards?
“Aces are assassins. Kings and Queens run their Suits. They are equals, but everyone knows the Queens are more intelligent and do all the work. Jacks are screens and front for their Kings and Queens. Everything goes through them before the Kings and Queens see or hear it. Tens take care of magick and Nines are artists. Eights are spies and Sevens are the medical staff. Sixes are linguists and Fives are Readers. Fours are seers, slash, code breakers and Threes make up the office staff. Duces are messengers. Any questions?”
“Uh,” said Tim. “Maybe a few.”
“Ok, what are they?”
“Did the artists do your tattoos?”
“They did but they worked with Tens for that. The tattoos are magically enhanced.”
“What’s a seer?”
“A person who’s psychic. One who can see into the future and the into the past. They can also do Far Viewing and read most minds.”
“That’s creepy as hell,” he said. “What’s a reader?”
“Fives look at everything that’s printed each day, searching for hidden messages and communications.”
“Why isn’t that the job of the code breakers?”
“Fives look at EVERYTHING, Code Breakers look at certain messages that are passed from one group to another.”
“So the Duce who came to see you was a Two? A Messenger?”
“The doctor was a Seven and the Kings and Queens run the four Suits and you kill people.”
“Perfect,” said Ace. “You got it.”
“What am I?” he asked.
“Mmmmm, never underestimate what you contribute to the cause,” she purred, licking her way down his chest.”
