Lake County Fair

With the exception of one pig, who was simply moving to a better sleeping spot, every single pig was sound asleep.  Not one moved or had their eyes open.  So Debbie asked one of the men why.  He said that pigs (at least these pigs) gain 300 pounds in two months.  All they do is eat and sleep.  Sometimes they have to wake them up to eat and then they go back to sleep.  He said that they have to crate the babies because the sleeping pigs roll over and crush them.  Seems insane to me but there you have it.  I don’t know how they got them to walk in a ring if, indeed, they did.  Anyway, it made me feel bad, so we petted some of them and moved on.

  1. That is so sad that the pigs are fed so much that they can’t move. They need their babies with them.

    • It’s very sad but he said that’s what pigs do. I don’t think all pigs are like that, although I don’t know a single thing about pigs, in the movies they are up up in their pens with their little ones. I don’t really get this whole thing. The whole thing is sad.

  2. Man’s inhumanity to everything. People end up doing sad things to animals because they think it’s ok…..they have grown up watching the same so they think it is ok. Jerks!

    • Yes, it’s terrible and I was so unaware. I thought it was all 4H kids and their animals. I’m not going back and I’m appalled at what people are capable of doing. It’s all taught, you’re right. Horrifying. I agree with you. Makes me sick.

  3. I cannot imagine this being the natural behavior of the pigs…has to be man “fattening them up” quickly for some reason.

I know my grandmother raised pigs for a very short time when i was little and i do not have any memory of them all laying around comatose.

    • That’s what I thought. Then I started getting upset because I thought it was all 4H kids raising their pets and now I don’t want to go there anymore.

      • Wellllll now here is the thing… i see your point BUT they all the animals there might take some pleasure or comfort in having someone who cares and loves them and pets them come see them. So there is that.

  4. I’m conflicted. The kids give them water and brush them and take such good care of them. When they show them in the ring the goats and animals seem happy to be with them. They touch their sides for confidence and they all have names. But the pigs kind of freaked me out. The sheep and goats were okay and so were the cows. The chickens were in cages but they had ribbons on their cages for Best of Show and things and since I have no real idea of what’s going on, it’s probably better that I stay home. I’ve never lived with any of those animals. I know a little about horses but that’s it.
