Michelangelo’s David…Florence, Italy

His hands are in perfect proportion to his body.  The sculpture was supposed to be shown on a very high platform/pedestal and when seen from that position, his hands would look  normal.  Seeing David, up close and personal, is not like seeing him in books, believe me. He is amazing and I couldn’t even look at the other statues because nothing really matters but him.  The other statues were by Michelangelo as well, but they must have felt embarrassed to be in the same area.  LOL  Seriously, unfinished, dwarfed and sidelined, they were easy to pass by since all eyes were on David from the minute you walked into the room.  I couldn’t even listen to what anyone was saying, he’s that powerful.

He is pretty amazing to see in person. M’s talent is legendary to be sure! Did you see La Pieta while in Rome? Sooo amazing. I was dismayed, horrified and ashamed when a madman attacked it while it was on tour in the US. An unspeakable, unthinkable act of violence – it’s a wonder that the Italians forgave us.

I just looked this up and can’t find anything about it, maybe I was confused by the news of the 10th anniversary (in 1982) of the attack in 1972 by a Hungarian at the Vatican. Hmmm. I was sure something happened while it was visiting NYC, my mind is a mystery – lol!

    • Some crazy guy attacked the David with a hammer ( in Florence), as well. People are just insane. Really, they are. I don’t know if the Italians ever forgave us but what could they do? We make up 70% of their economy. Again…people are crazy and attack things anywhere, really, I don’t even know what to say.

It always amazes me Gigi how some people can breath life into a slab of stone.

  4. He is amazing. Love this detail of him.

  5. Amazing! The detail you can see just in this shot…the flex of the wrist, the veins, the fingernails.

Seeing the whole thing in person must just take your breath away!!!

Seeing “David” for me was like seeing the Grand Canyon. You just look in reverence & gratitude.
