“Cute name for your bar, by the way,” said Serpentine. “The Coffin. Catchy.”
“I’m truly thrilled that you LIKED it,” I said, as the elevator slowed.
“We’re here and I think you’ll be pleased.”
The doors opened and Dreamer said, “Lily, what took you so long? Look,” he continued, opening his mouth. “I have fangs, just like yours.”
“Move aside Dream Boy,” said JJ. “I will have this body FOREVER,” he laughed, turning around. “No more hours in the gym. No more starving myself. I will be magnificent and available to my fans, uh…. I might take up a new career, forever is a long time,” he said softly, looking at his abs. “But see, I have fangs too. When do you think I’ll stop drooling.”
“Harry?” I said, looking at my bartender, sulking in the background. “Why is there blood all over your mouth and shirt?”
“He keeps pulling his fangs out,” said Serpentine easily. “Stupid boy.”
“I hate it here,” said Harry. “I want to go home. I miss Lynn and I miss my life. I miss the sun. I want to go home. I don’t want fangs.”
“How can you miss the sun? It’s only been two days?” laughed Serpentine.
“Help me Lily.”
“Send him back,” I said, looking into Serpentine’s eyes. “Now. Please. Thank you.”
“Oh, fine,” she said, snapping her fingers. “He wasn’t any fun to have around anyway.”
“Did you put him back where he was?” I asked very softly.
“Yes, yes. He won’t remember being here at all. He’ll think there was an attack on the bar and that everyone moved on.”
“He won’t believe that.”
“Trust me. He will.”
“Devon?” I said. “I thought….”
“I was dead for good?”
“Something Like that.”
“No, we’re all okay and doing our jobs.”
Fluffy ran to me and fell on my feet, begging for a tummy rub.
“What’s going on?”
“We,” said Serpentine excitedly, “are going to take over the world, breed the humans for food, and finally, take our rightful place at the top. We want you in a position of leadership, that’s the surprise.”
“Like I haven’t heard that before,” she sighed. “Devon, talk some sense into her while I check on the lab rats.”
“So, you’ve been genetical altered?” I asked. “You’re not pure demon anymore?”
“Sure I am but now I’m Super Demon.”
“You’re also a liar and someone I never want to see again.”
“You don’t meant that, Lil. It’s still me.”
“Kind of the point. I officially hate you, so g e t o u t o f m y w a y,” I growled, pushing him hard. “Dreamer,” I yelled. “Can you got a minute?”
Dreamer moved closer, “What’s up Lil?”
“Do you want to stay here?”
“And live forever?” he grinned. “Oh,” he said, looking at my face. “You’re not kidding, are you.”
“I can get you out, if you want to go home,” I said calmly.
“I’m staying Lil. I feel better than I have in a long time. I like being able to see in the dark, hear every little sound, be stronger.” He smiled. “I’m sorry if you’re disappointed in me, but I like it here, so does JJ.”
I nodded. “Just wanted to make sure,” I said, trying to smile. “I’m still going to kill Serpentine. Are you in?”
“Nah. She’s okay, once you get to know her.”
“You going to try and stop me?”
“Stop you from doing what, boss?”
I hugged him, then walked away. Fluffy pressed close against my leg. “Can you get me out of here Fluff?” I asked, looking at her. She yipped once then kind of smiled at me. “Good girl,” I said, pulling on her ear. “I knew I could count on you.”
I walked up to Devon and pressed in close. He smiled and put his arms around me. I slid the second syringe out of my pocket, backed up a bit and slammed it home. His eyes opened wide and he fell to the ground in front of me. His body contorted into all kinds of interesting shapes and then he turned to ash. I pushed him around with the toe of my shoe and reached for Fluffy. “Let’s go girl, we’ve got work to do.”
